The Nine Months Worth a Doctorate
The Making of a Mind
When Marcel Ehrmann decided to send his son to Romagnieu, Thierry was not yet nine years old. He had already entered the misunderstanding that sometimes accompanies children who are too quick: he understood before the explanation was finished, answered before the question had reached its final form, and found it difficult to repeat what he believed he had already assimilated.
At school, this head start was no privilege. It isolated him. What adults might have recognized as precocity could easily become insolence; what he experienced as intellectual obviousness was received as a challenge to authority.
The child was not necessarily seeking confrontation, but he did not yet know how to slow his thought to adjust it to the collective pace. He formulated quickly, decided quickly, and had difficulty understanding why a correct answer was not enough to end the discussion.
His father did not try to solve the problem by giving him more books. Thierry already had books. He knew the world in which intelligence is tested through the accuracy of a demonstration, the elegance of reasoning, or the speed of an answer.
Marcel Ehrmann chose to move him into another world, where no answer has value unless it makes it possible to feed an animal, conserve a water supply, keep a fire going, guide a horse, or recognize the moment when rain is about to fall.
Thierry could not yet understand this decision as a form of education.
He was an only child. His father and mother had been only children as well. Behind these words lay a reality more radical than a simple family configuration: he had neither brother nor sister, but neither did he have an uncle, aunt, cousin, or other relative with whom to seek complicity, refuge, or another form of authority. For him, family did not constitute a network.
It was reduced almost entirely to the concentrated power of two parents, and more particularly to that of a father whose recognition he sought, despite his young age, without ever relinquishing his own place.
Under these conditions, separation took on a particular intensity. He was not merely leaving his home. He was leaving almost his entire world.
At first, he experienced his departure for Romagnieu as banishment, perhaps as punishment. Looking back, however, this period would appear to him as one of the most decisive acts in his formation.
Romagnieu lies in Isère, in the countryside still little affected by the conveniences that had begun to transform urban life in the early 1970s. Three generations of farmers lived on this family farm. Work was still carried out according to practices, some of which seemed to come from a much older time.
Electricity did not organize the days. The telephone did not abolish distances. Drinking water did not appear on demand from a faucet. It had to be fetched, drawn, carried, stored, and one could never forget that what had just been consumed would be replaced only through renewed effort.
The first days were a stripping away.
Familiar objects had disappeared, but above all the automatisms that accompanied them. In ordinary life, the child turned a switch, opened a faucet, or called someone without having to think about the hidden infrastructure behind the gesture. On the farm, every resource retained the visible trace of the work required to obtain it.
Water had weight.
Fire required vigilance.
Light had duration.
Night could not be pushed back by a simple decision. It descended over the buildings, invaded the paths, and suddenly made impracticable gestures that only minutes earlier had still seemed possible. One had to anticipate. Prepare before darkness. Bring in what needed to be brought in. Check the animals. Protect the supplies. Arrange the tools so they could be found again.
Thierry thus discovered a first law that had never been taught to him in this form: time is not merely what clocks measure. It is matter with which one must compose.
Nature does not negotiate with human schedules. It obeys a much older clock, a clock from the depths of time, indifferent to impatience and argument alike.
This discovery did not first come through words.
It entered through the body.
The farm did not ask the child what he knew. It asked what he could do. He had to carry, move, cut, tie, hold, approach an animal without frightening it, repeat a gesture until it became precise enough to be useful.
His intellectual head start gave him no immunity here. A badly handled tool respected neither the age nor the intelligence of the person using it.
The scythe gave him a brutal lesson.
The instrument appeared simple: a long blade attached to a handle and a regular movement that laid down the grass. Yet the scythe required almost continuous maintenance. After a few minutes of work, the cutting edge lost efficiency. The mower would stop, take up a long stone kept damp, and run it rapidly along the blade.
The gesture was precise and dangerous. The stone had to remain in contact with the metal at a consistent angle. One hand held the scythe, the other guided the stone in a quick movement that had become almost automatic for men who had repeated it thousands of times. To a child watching, sharpening seemed deceptively simple. Apparently, all one had to do was imitate the adults’ speed.
Thierry believed he could reproduce what he had just seen.
He wanted to go fast, like the mowers.
The wet stone slipped. His hand met the cutting edge.
The cut tore deeply through the part of his right hand between the thumb and fingers, over several centimeters. In his memory, the blood, pain, and suddenness of the accident immediately shattered every illusion of mastery.
No doctor was called. In that farming world, a doctor was summoned only for situations considered extremely serious. The wound was cleaned with generous amounts of alcohol, then wrapped in bandages that had to be changed regularly. It healed as best it could.
It would leave a substantial scar, still visible today. Nearly thirty years later, surgery would reduce its consequences without making it disappear.
Thierry still sometimes looks at that scar.
It is the physical trace of a learning error, but also of a first unmediated confrontation with matter. Much later, during the titanic construction of the Abode of Chaos, he would take considerable risks and sustain other injuries. With the notable exception of the injury to his eye, many of them would seem almost minor compared with this childhood cut.
Pain had abruptly ended any temptation to treat the tool as an abstract problem.
Thierry had intellectually understood the principle of sharpening. He had observed the position of the stone, the speed of the movement, and the sequence of gestures. But an answer that was correct in the mind could remain false in the body.
It was not enough to have seen.
It was not enough to have understood.
He had to have learned.
Matter had just informed him that it accepted no approximation.
This correction was unlike the punishments of school. It had neither mood nor intention. The blade did not punish. It obeyed its form, its edge, and the energy applied to it. The error was not moral. It was human, and it resulted from insufficient learning.
Thierry had assumed that reproducing a gesture observed among the farmers was enough to master it. He learned otherwise. To prevent the accident from happening again, protesting would have served no purpose. He had to mentally replay the scene, identify the excessive speed, the position of the hand, the wrong angle of the stone, and the premature confidence placed in imitation.
Perhaps this was where the first profound transformation occurred.
The child who had learned to find the answer quickly discovered that speed could become an error when it preceded experience. The other tools confirmed this lesson.
A plow does not obediently follow the line imagined by the person guiding it. It encounters stones, roots, and variations in the terrain. The earth offers different resistance depending on its moisture, depth, and the crops that have previously worked it. A soil is never exactly the same as it was the day before.
A horse, meanwhile, is not simply a source of traction. It possesses its balance, temperament, fears, fatigue, memory, and that disconcerting ability to kick out for the slightest reason or no reason at all.
Thierry had many mishaps with horses. He had to learn their distance, their power, and the speed with which an apparently calm animal could change its behavior. A horse perceives the hesitation of the person leading it. It senses tension in the reins, a change of support, a fear the child believes he has concealed.
One must act without brutalizing. Too sharp a command can tense the animal instead of making it move forward. A poorly placed hesitation transmits the uncertainty of the person guiding it. Pressure that was sufficient the day before becomes excessive the next day if the horse is tired or the ground has changed.
No gesture can be repeated mechanically without taking the entire situation into account.
The difficulties he encountered with these animals gave him knowledge and humility that easy successes never could have provided. Later, he would ride bareback without difficulty. That ease would not come from domination imposed on the horse, but from an old apprenticeship in its balance and body language.
The child began to understand that reality was not dead matter placed before human intelligence.
It responds.
It resists.
It varies.
This variation is everywhere. It appears in the texture of the soil after rain, in wood that burns more or less well depending on its moisture content, in a water reserve that declines more quickly when a particular task must be performed, in food whose preparation depends on what has been harvested, preserved, or exchanged.
On the farm, food did not present itself as an object detached from its origin. It still carried the season that had produced it, the soil in which it had grown, and the gestures required for its transformation.
Thierry discovered what it meant to wait. In his family environment, observation had often been followed by a reaction and then rapid formulation. At Romagnieu, it had to be inscribed within a longer chronology. It was no longer simply a matter of identifying a phenomenon and explaining it. He had to follow it, sometimes for days or weeks, before understanding what was actually happening.
Germination cannot be accelerated by impatience.
A season cannot be corrected by arguing with it.
Growth has its rhythm, as do ripening, gestation, drying, and fermentation. Some actions require an immediate decision; others would be destroyed by haste.
The elders distinguished these temporalities without explaining them at length. Their knowledge revealed itself in the way they looked before acting. They took a handful of soil, pressed it between their fingers, observed the color of the sky, the direction of the clouds, or the light settling over a field.
In a smell of humidity, a shift in the wind, or the shape of a twilight, they recognized the announcement of a change still invisible to the child.
At first, Thierry might believe they were guessing. Little by little, he understood that they were comparing.
Each present sign was compared with hundreds of earlier situations. What the child perceived as instantaneous intuition resulted from accumulated memory. A leaf turned over by the wind, dust no longer rising in the same way, an unusual silence in the hedges, or an almost imperceptible change in the air did not constitute isolated proof.
They formed a constellation. No single sign was sufficient. Their convergence, however, indicated that the entire system was beginning to change.
Thierry obviously did not yet use the expression weak signal. He possessed neither its theory nor its vocabulary. Yet he was discovering its oldest practice: recognizing, in a minute variation, the beginning of an event that had not yet taken visible form.
The earth had taught him that reality did not negotiate. Animals would teach him something even more unsettling: reality often warns before it strikes, provided one knows how to recognize those who perceive its first signs.
On the farm, animals were not part of the scenery. They participated in the daily organization and imposed their presence at every hour. They had to be fed, observed, cared for, led, their spaces cleaned, and any deviation from ordinary behavior immediately recognized.
The farmers knew how to diagnose the beginning of laminitis in a horse even before an outside observer could distinguish the symptoms. They did not necessarily proceed through explicit reasoning.
They saw that weight-bearing had shifted, that a gait had changed slightly, that an animal hesitated to place a hoof down, or that it distributed its weight differently.
Young Thierry first learned to distinguish the animals. Seen from a distance, a herd appears homogeneous. As he spent time among it, differences emerged. Each animal had its habits, its way of standing, moving, demanding, or refusing. One approached without fear; another maintained a constant distance.
One ate regularly; another interrupted its meal at the slightest noise.
These particularities were not anecdotal. They constituted the individual norm against which any anomaly became perceptible.
Thierry also began mentally mapping the organization of the herd. He identified the dominant animal, alliances, exclusions, dependencies, and collective movements triggered by the reaction of a single individual.
He did not yet know that this very concrete observation would serve him decades later when he studied tribal, clan, and ethnic structures in an attempt to understand certain conflicts, particularly in Iraq.
At Romagnieu, of course, he had none of these geopolitical frameworks. He was simply discovering that a group that appears uniform to someone looking from afar is actually composed of distinct relationships, hierarchies, memories, and loyalties.
To know that an animal is behaving strangely, one must first have observed at length its habitual way of being in the world.
A horse may refuse a passage it takes every day. A dog begins to circle, pricks up its ears, or seeks unusual proximity. Birds alter their trajectory or temporarily disappear from a place where they usually gather. Livestock become nervous while the sky still appears calm.
The elders did not immediately translate these behaviors into marvelous stories.
They looked. They compared the sign with the wind, temperature, condition of the soil, time of day, and reactions of the other animals. An event is not going to occur simply because a dog barks. But if several behaviors change simultaneously, if the air seems different, and if even the birds change direction, it becomes reasonable to prepare.
Animals do not predict the future.
They live more deeply in the present. They perceive sounds, smells, vibrations, and atmospheric variations that human beings no longer notice, or have ceased to regard as information. Their bodies function as receiving systems continuously open to the environment.
Thierry thus encountered, for the first time in the animal world, what he would later call the weak signal.
This discovery shifted the boundary of intelligence. Intelligence was no longer only the ability to reason, calculate, or speak. It could reside in sensitivity to the world, in registering an infinitesimal change, and in an adjusted reaction to what had not yet become obvious to everyone.
Yet another error had to be avoided. Because animals sometimes perceive before humans do, it would be easy to attribute supernatural powers to them. Romagnieu taught him instead not to fill the space of the unknown too quickly with the marvelous.
This question took a particularly striking form with the dowser. He was a man known in several surrounding villages and hamlets. Whenever he came to search for a water source, Thierry tried, whenever possible, to accompany him. The dowser moved across the ground with a hazel fork. He advanced slowly, attentive to the movements of the instrument and to reactions others did not seem to feel.
For a child, the scene had all the attributes of mystery. A man walked across apparently uniform ground and distinguished an invisible depth within it. The fork reacted. A location was designated. Then digging or drilling sometimes confirmed the presence of water.
The supernatural dimension could easily have taken hold of a child’s imagination. Yet it did not overpower Thierry’s young reason. He did not reject what he saw, but neither was he satisfied with the explanation of a gift.
He tried in vain to sort things out. He observed the terrain, plants, shape of the ground, and the dowser’s gestures. He wanted to identify the rational chain that led to the designation of the water point.
Marcel Ehrmann was not present during these searches. He came to see his son on certain weekends, but this inquiry belonged to Thierry. It was built in silence, from what the child saw without yet being able to demonstrate it.
The animals had already taught him that extraordinary perception can have perfectly real causes. What a human being does not sense does not therefore cease to exist.
Could the dowser, too, be registering clues others did not know how to read?
Perhaps he recognized certain plants, a different degree of humidity, a slight depression in the terrain, the particular color of soil, the presence of insects, the shape of a stone, or the way vegetation had resisted a dry period. Perhaps his body had integrated so much data that the conclusion emerged before he could consciously enumerate its causes.
Thierry never succeeded in demonstrating it. Yet he remained convinced that a rationality lay behind the gesture.
The mystery did not disappear. It changed in nature.
It was no longer necessarily the intrusion of the supernatural into the world. It could be the provisional name given to a chain of causality too complex, too old, or calculated too quickly to be decomposed by the person carrying it out.
This hypothesis would remain with Thierry: before declaring a phenomenon inexplicable, one must ask whether one is simply facing an intelligence of observation whose grammar is still unknown. But even the finest observation disappears with the person who carries it if it is not transmitted.
The farm then revealed another dimension of farming knowledge. The elders did not merely remember. They recorded.
At Romagnieu, Thierry consulted notebooks and farm registers. They preserved dates, harvests, quantities, incidents, and sometimes observations about the weather, animals, or condition of the land. Writing was not ornamental. It extended the memory of bodies.
When they had no notebook at hand, particularly while out in the fields, some used other media. A stone placed at the corner of a property, a tree, or a durable feature of the landscape could receive an engraved date, marker, or symbol.
Memory was therefore not enclosed within a book.
It settled into the territory.
Notes made comparison possible.
One could compare one season with another, recover the time of a birth, the duration of an illness, the quantity of a harvest, or the effects of a rainy period. An impression became data. Repeated data became a series. And the series made it possible to perceive what memory alone would have distorted or forgotten.
Thierry thus discovered, in still rudimentary form, one of the operations that would later organize his entire life: observe, preserve, compare, connect.
At Romagnieu, nothing was isolated. The sky altered the earth; the earth transformed plants; plants fed humans and animals; animals, through their behavior, in turn informed humans about changes in the environment.
Water connected the depths of the soil to the surface. Fire transformed materials. Human gestures took part in this circulation without ever being able to claim complete command over it.
The notebooks themselves did not clearly separate what academic thought would divide among meteorology, agriculture, household economics, veterinary medicine, and family history. Everything belonged to the same world because, in real life, everything acted on everything else.
Thierry could not yet give philosophical form to this unity.
Much later, reading Spinoza would give him words for an intuition lived before it was thought: man is not a separate empire within nature. He belongs to the same necessity as bodies, animals, plants, waters, and winds.
Things do not constitute a collection of autonomous objects. They are different expressions of a single reality traversed by causes and relationships.
At Romagnieu, the farmers did not teach this philosophy. They lived it.
They inhabited a Spinozist world without needing to name it.
Thierry would later study the Asian pantheism of illusion and the Western pantheism of rational reality. He would make Spinoza’s formula his own: Deus sive Natura (God, that is, Nature).
But thought would come after experience. The child sent to the farm as though temporarily removed from a system to which he adapted poorly therefore did not return corrected in the ordinary sense of the term. His speed had not disappeared. Nor had his curiosity. He had not learned intellectual submission.
He had acquired something more valuable: a counterweight. He now knew that an idea had to encounter matter.
That an attractive theory can be defeated by a clumsy gesture. That a tool forces one to respect the forces running through it.
That an animal cannot be understood without prolonged observation of its singular behavior. That important events often begin through almost invisible variations.
That mystery can conceal an accumulation of data rather than supernatural intervention. And that knowledge, if it is not to die with the person who possesses it, must be recorded.
The nine months at Romagnieu awarded him no diploma. They taught him that there are forms of knowledge without teachers, experiences without laboratories, intelligences without discourse, and archives without libraries.
Marcel Ehrmann had sent to the farm a child who perhaps believed that understanding quickly was enough. He returned with the intuition that understanding correctly sometimes requires looking for a long time.
That intuition was still only a seed. But most great intellectual constructions do not suddenly appear at thirty, forty, or fifty, as though a late illumination were enough to bring them into being. Their seeds are prepared much earlier, in experiences whose significance the child does not yet know.
Romagnieu was one of them.
Thierry still had to learn to observe not only the earth, animals, and gestures, but also his own experiences, his errors, and the very conditions under which a conclusion is born.
The world had taught him to leave traces. What remained was to construct his first notebooks.
