The Cave and the World
Headquarter: The Chamber of Transformation
There is a contradiction within the Headquarter that, in my view, is not really one: the more I shut myself away, the more the world enters. From the outside, this might seem paradoxical. A cave is normally a place of retreat, isolation, silence, sometimes initiation. One leaves the outside light to descend into an enclosed space where something must be understood differently. The Headquarter clearly belongs to this symbolic family. But it is simultaneously one of the most connected places I have ever lived.
The cave does not remove me from the world; it allows me to receive more of it without being physically dispersed by it. We must start from a simple point: a connection does not eliminate distance, it reconfigures it.
Today, we tend to take for granted the possibility of receiving information from New York, Beijing, London, Dubai, or Seoul in a matter of seconds. But I remember a time when this kind of simultaneity did not yet exist.
I experienced telex, the first networks, X.25, slow transmissions, the first systems where accessing remote data was already an almost physical experience. Perhaps that is why I have never stopped feeling the materiality of the network.
For many modern users, the internet seems immaterial because it disappears behind the screen. For me, it remains made up of machines, lines, protocols, redundancies, addresses, latency, fiber optics, data centers, routing, and potential outages. Behind the fluidity of the interface, I still see the infrastructure.
The Headquarter embodies this dual vision. The screen displays immediacy. The server recalls the physical depth that makes it possible.
That is why the machines never seemed to me to be mere technical accessories in the room. They were part of the system of representation. They said something about the contemporary world. A connected architecture is not simply an architecture equipped with the internet; it becomes a place whose physical boundaries no longer correspond to its functional boundaries.
Geographically, I am in Saint-Romain-au-Mont-d’Or. Informationally, I can be simultaneously in several markets, several countries, several time periods.
The Headquarter thus possesses two superimposed geographies. The first is measurable in meters. The second in connections. This is probably one of the reasons why I wanted to give names to certain machines and functions: Nemo, Neo, Morpheus. These names are not decorative. They belong to universes that accompany me intellectually and that allow me to transform an abstract infrastructure into mental characters.
Nemo first. Captain Nemo lives in the Nautilus, beneath the surface of the world, removed from states but able to observe their movements. He is in a machine that is simultaneously home, laboratory, vehicle, fortress, and instrument of knowledge. I obviously could not help but perceive this connection.
The Headquarter is not a submarine, but it has something of the Nautilus about it: an autonomous architecture, a form of physical withdrawal and, paradoxically, an increased ability to observe what is happening outside.
Nemo is not simply running away from the world.
He changes his point of observation.
I never sought hermitage in the sense of becoming disinterested in the outside world. My withdrawal is functional. I need a space sufficiently protected from social noise in order to receive a much broader noise: that of the planet.
Then there is Neo. Neo obviously belongs to another mythology: that of The Matrix. Here again, what interests me is not the film's aesthetics as a simple cultural reference, but the question it poses:
How do we know that what we take to be reality is actually reality and not a representation coherent enough to deceive us?
This question runs through my entire life. It is found in the Blind Spot, in bias, in databases, in the Art Market, in geopolitics, in statistics, in law, in the way an institution looks or does not look at a work.
Neo is the one who discovers that the visible layer is not the system. He must learn to read the code behind the facade. I could not have dreamed of a better metaphor for the daily work of Headquarter. A news report is a visible layer. A market quote is a visible layer. A political statement is a visible layer. A court ruling, too, presents a visible layer. The work begins when we ask:
What structures make this information possible?
What is the benefit of the product?
What data is missing?
Which variable is not visible?
What historical precedent can place it within a longer series?
That is exactly what I have always tried to do: look at the code behind the image.
Morpheus, finally, occupies a different place. In The Matrix, he is the one who opens the possibility of awakening. He does not simply transmit information; he forces the other to choose whether they want to continue living in the representation or accept a more difficult reality.
Here again, the character resonates with me because knowledge is never neutral. Knowing more sometimes requires you to change your behavior. Data that does not change your model might just be additional information. Data that destroys your model becomes knowledge.
The Headquarter is filled with these moments.
A number is coming up.
An image contradicts this.
A document reappears.
A legal decision is on the rise.
A geopolitical event suddenly renders obsolete an analysis that seemed solid twenty-four hours earlier.
We must then accept the red pill in the methodological sense: relinquishing the comfort of the previous model. This is probably why I need well-documented cognitive environments. The more memory a system possesses, the more it can resist the convenient fiction of the present.
New information must be able to be immediately compared with the archives.
The screens open the Headquarter to the world, while the physical archives give it a depth that the digital flow does not spontaneously maintain.
Columns are also part of this architecture. I have always viewed them as more than just technical or structural elements. A column is an extremely ancient motif. It supports. It connects the floor to the ceiling. It makes a vertical axis visible. It belongs to the temple, the palace, the library, the justice system, the architecture of power.
In the Headquarter, the columns become columns of resistance. The term is obviously mechanical, but it is also intellectual.
Resist what?
To the collapse.
To the overload.
To the noise.
To amnesia.
To the flow that would make all information equivalent to the next.
A column supports a structure when a force is exerted. That is precisely what a method of thinking must do. Serious thought does not consist of freely drifting from one opinion to another. It must possess foundational points, principles solid enough to withstand contradiction without immediately collapsing.
My intellectual pillars have always been the same: source, verification, chronology, comparison, identification of bias, and the distinction between fact and interpretation. Around these pillars, everything can evolve. Without them, the system becomes merely decorative.
I see here something of the reality of construction. The freer an architecture appears, the more it depends on a few perfectly identified points of resistance. Absolute freedom of form exists only because another part of the system accepts the load. The same is true in thought.
Servers make this idea even clearer. A server is not just a machine that responds to a request. It is a promise of availability. It is required to:
Is the memory still there?
Can it answer now?
Can it answer tomorrow?
Can it respond if another machine falls?
Can it continue if a network is interrupted?
This obsession with availability has been a driving force for Groupe Serveur and Artprice since their inception. Data that exists but is no longer accessible when needed is practically lost. This is why any serious architecture incorporates redundancy, replication, backups, load balancing, and alternative paths.
I have always viewed these questions as philosophical problems as much as technical ones.
What is memory if it depends on only one medium?
What is knowledge if its disappearance is caused by the breakdown of a machine?
What is an institution if its continuity rests on a single man?
These questions are more similar than one might think. IT resilience and human transmission belong to the same conceptual family: preventing a single point of failure from bringing down the whole system.
Headquarter thus receives servers as distributed memory systems. Imagine the scene: in a very dense space, global information appears on screens, machines communicate with each other, physical archives remain, telecommunications connect continents, and amidst this flow, a body continues to move, walk, consult, speak, and write. Digital technology does not replace the body. It expands the range within which the body can act.
I prefer to speak here of the rematerialization of work. The body remains in a room, but part of its capabilities are projected elsewhere. A decision made here can produce an effect on a remote server, a marketplace, or a database accessed from another continent. The center thus becomes both local and distributed simultaneously.
That is why the term "Headquarter" seems so accurate to me. There is the central location. But this location is only valuable because of the network it connects. An isolated headquarters commands nothing. It becomes an empty fortress. The Headquarter only exists as a center because it is connected to active peripheries.
This architecture has always reminded me of the brain. The brain is physically located, but its function depends on everything it receives from the body and the environment. Cut off sensory input, and you no longer possess the same understanding of the world.
The Headquarter operates in the same way: screens, servers, telecommunications, collaborators, archives, correspondents, markets, media, Artprice systems are all related channels.
Information flows upwards. The central hub interprets it. Then decisions are made. This process is never perfectly centralized, of course. A modern company has multiple decision-making centers. Nadège, Sydney, and the teams are not passive extensions of a single brain. Each has its own structure. We have already established it. But that does not preclude a particular location from playing the specific role of a convergence hub.
The distinction is important. Convergence is not the absolute concentration of power. It is the point at which certain heterogeneous pieces of information become comparable. Headquarter is this spatial comparator. I can receive a commercial data point and immediately relate it to a geopolitical one. A technical issue to a legal one. A market fluctuation to a regulatory change. A political event to a work of art.
This explains why the boundary between businesses and the Abode of Chaos is so difficult to define here. They touch both physically and intellectually. Outside, one could imagine two universes: on one side, Artprice, a data company; on the other, the Abode of Chaos, a Total Work of Art.
In Headquarter, this separation seems almost artificial. The same screens can display an auction, an international news report, and an image destined to become creative material. The same servers contribute to a global memory architecture. The same person moves from one system to another without changing their mind.
This is where the philosophical symmetry between Artprice and the Abode of Chaos becomes apparent even before we fully develop it in Part XII. Artprice transforms the documentary chaos of the Art Market into structured data. The Abode of Chaos transforms historical and geopolitical chaos into visual signs. The Headquarter is located at their intersection. It receives both forms of chaos. It seeks a geometry within each. This, at its core, is probably the center of transformation.
It does not create the world. It does not create events. It transforms their legibility. And this operation can be extremely rapid. When a major historical event occurs, there is always a delay between what happens and how a society begins to understand it.
The media initially provide fragments.
Governments are giving their stories.
The markets are reacting.
The images are coming.
The experts are speaking.
The witnesses contradict this.
Then, gradually, a form emerges. In Headquarter, I have always sought to shorten the time between the fragment and the structure. But without falling into the illusion of easy prediction. Understanding quickly is not about speaking quickly. It is sometimes about knowing how to wait for a missing piece of information.
This discipline is essential because the digital flow is pushing in exactly the opposite direction.
It rewards immediate reaction.
A social network does not ask you: have you checked?
It asks: what do you think now?
I consider this architecture of permanent reaction to be one of the greatest cognitive dangers of our time.
Headquarter is connected to real time, but it must not become a slave to it. That is why the cave is necessary. The cave creates distance. It allows one to receive the noise without being physically immersed in the crowd that produces it. It is a privilege of position, and it must be recognized as such.
Being in a secure center with access to vast amounts of information is not the same as being on the ground under bombardment, in a panicked trading floor, or in a courtroom during a verdict. I have never confused the two. Information is not experience. But it allows us to connect experiences. That is the role I have set for myself: to build the map without claiming to be every territory.
In geopolitics, this boundary appears with particular clarity. The Abode of Chaos is filled with faces, wars, crises, and places I have observed for decades. It would have been very easy to transform this interest into an omniscient stance: I know what's happening in the world. I have never believed that. On the contrary, I know that all remote knowledge has blind spots. That is why I use multiple sources.
The network allows precisely this plurality. Information can arrive via an agency, a local source, an institution, an economist, a correspondent, a satellite image, or a statistical database. None of these sources represents the whole world. The convergence of sources simply increases the likelihood of gaining a clearer perspective.
Triangulation is not measured by the number of sources, but by their origin, their degree of independence, and the possibility of reconstructing their relationships. Ten repetitions of the same information do not constitute ten confirmations.
The Headquarter is therefore less an accumulation chamber than a triangulation chamber.
This statement seems particularly apt to me. We are not looking for a perfect source. We are looking for several sufficiently independent perspectives to locate what each sees imperfectly. This is the very principle of navigation, geometry, intelligence gathering, criminal investigation, journalism, and, to a certain extent, science. Once again, very disparate disciplines share the same intellectual structure.
Perhaps that is why I never truly believed in their borders. A good legal investigation, a market analysis, and a geopolitical reading require similar steps: identifying the source, dating, verifying, comparing, and searching for what's missing. The subject changes. The method remains.
Nemo, Neo and Morpheus then become three possible figures of this method.
Nemo: change your point of view.
Neo: reading behind the representation.
Morpheus: accepting that real knowledge requires abandoning certain models.
This triptych is obviously not an academic theory. It is a personal working mythology.
But mythologies are sometimes extraordinary cognitive tools because they condense into a single image what a treatise would take several pages to explain. I have always used this type of imagery.
Alchemy does exactly the same thing. It transforms complex processes into characters, operations, colors, animals, metals. Not because the ancients were incapable of abstract reasoning, but because an image possesses a power of memorization and association that pure abstraction does not always have.
The Headquarter is filled with these symbolic capacitors. A machine can be a machine and simultaneously Nemo. A column can be a support and a resistor column. A screen can be a display device and an open crack in the cave. This overlapping of functions seems very important to me. It prevents the technical environment from becoming sterile.
I am wary of technologies devoid of imagination. A tool understood solely through its technical specifications ends up being used only for the functions intended by its manufacturer. Imagination allows us to shift its use.
This is how I have always worked with technology: not as a consumer waiting for the next feature, but as someone constantly asking: what can this tool do that may not have been planned yet?
The internet itself was born from this kind of appropriation. Networks have always been used by individuals in ways their architects did not fully anticipate. This is one of the properties of any large, open system. Headquarter had to remain open in this way.
A machine enters the system for a specific function, then it can become something else within the overall architecture. A screen designed to display data can become a tool for visual composition. An economic archive can become a material for artistic creation. A news feed can feed an iconographic atlas. The boundary between professional and artistic use disappears because the raw material is the same: information.
This probably explains why I have always refused to strictly separate working hours. When the world is constantly connected, there is no longer a real time when it stops producing events. New York keeps going when Europe slows down. Asia starts when others fall asleep. Markets take turns. Crises do not respect time zones.
The Headquarter therefore also belongs to a global timescale. Night is important there. European night is not world night. I worked late precisely because another continent was becoming active. This experience transforms one's perception of time.
The traditional day is linked to the local sun. The network creates a polycentric time. There is always somewhere a market opening, a newsroom working, a server receiving data, an event starting. The planet never sleeps simultaneously.
This can become exhausting. And that is where the cave still offers protection. It creates a personal rhythm within the global rhythm. I can close a door without severing the connections. This distinction is almost anthropological.
It seems to me that we need to learn to establish thresholds in networks that no longer have them. Otherwise, ubiquity becomes permanent intrusion. The Headquarter was therefore also a system for controlling access. Not everything should enter with the same priority.
A technical alert does not have the same value as a historical event. A message does not have the same value as a legal decision. A rumor does not have the same value as primary data. Massive connectivity forces us to invent a hierarchy of attention.
Scarcity has shifted: information abounds, but attention spans remain limited. The biological brain remains limited. We can multiply screens; we cannot proportionally multiply consciousness.
This boundary has always intrigued me. It precisely justifies the spatial architecture, the codes, the classifications, and the automation. The environment must handle some of the filtering without deciding for you what deserves consideration. It is an extremely delicate line.
The more effectively a system filters, the more it can also create a blind spot. Contemporary recommendation algorithms are a perfect example: they show you what they deem relevant and, in doing so, render invisible everything they have rejected. Cognitive comfort increases. So does the blind spot.
That is why I never wanted my work systems to become completely automated. There need to be escape routes. Unforeseen sources. Chance encounters. Paper. Humans. Contradictions. The cave must remain porous.
This is what distinguishes it from a bunker. The Bunker of the Abode of Chaos seeks to prevent the outside from entering. The initiatory cave seeks to transform the one who receives the outside. The Headquarter is more of a cave than a bunker, even if some of its forms may evoke a command post.
I am not seeking protection from reality. I am seeking a way to receive it without being immediately destroyed by its noise. The nuance lies precisely there. It also holds true psychologically.
During the years of legal proceedings, the Headquarter was the place where it was necessary to simultaneously receive potentially devastating decisions and continue working on the future. This coexistence was not abstract. A legal case could be open on one screen while an Artprice report was being processed on another, and a work from the Abode of Chaos was still in preparation.
The world could tell me: stop.
The architecture of the place responded: there are still other flows.
I do not want to elaborate on the legal proceedings here, which will have their own chapter, but they partly explain why the Headquarter became a place of resistance. It prevented a particular conflict from colonizing the entirety of reality.
There was always something else to do.
A foundation to maintain.
A team worth supporting.
A market to analyze.
A work to be created.
A family.
An outside world.
Paradoxically, the connection became a form of freedom. My adversaries could try to confine me to a procedure; the network continued to open thousands of other paths. This is perhaps one of the deepest reasons why I believe so strongly in networks. A well-constructed network prevents a single center from entirely defining your horizon. There is always another way.
It is almost a political thought. It is already present in Netnobility, in the Temporary Autonomous Zone, in pirates, in hackers, in this fascination with decentralized architectures capable of surviving the closure of a node. The Headquarter cave is therefore not contradictory to the Zone. It may even be a permanent version of it.
The Temporary Autonomous Zone sought a space that would momentarily escape certain forms of control. The Headquarter, on the other hand, builds autonomy through infrastructure. It is no longer simply about moving out of sight. It is about possessing enough pathways, memory, connections, and redundancies to avoid being entirely dependent on a single system.
This autonomy is never absolute. No one is in a global network. But it can be increased. It is still a question of resilience. I keep coming back to this word because it connects fields that, on the surface, have nothing to do with each other: psychology, computer science, architecture, business, the Total Work of Art.
A resilient system is not one that never experiences shocks. It is one that continues despite the shock. The Headquarter is intellectually built around this idea.
A machine falls: another way must exist.
Data disappears: a backup must remain.
A market collapses: the company must have other capabilities.
A legal proceeding is launched: creation must not stop.
One conviction collapses: thought must be able to reformulate.
Resilience is not immobility. It is the possibility of transformation without disappearance. We find ourselves back at the very definition of the living work of art from the previous chapter. Yet another fractal. The same principle at different scales.
The Abode of Chaos survives by transforming itself. Headquarter survives by absorbing new technologies. The company survives by transforming its infrastructure. Thought survives by correcting its models. This repetition is not accidental.
It shows that I have probably only ever built a limited number of basic structures, but that I have applied them to very different objects. This is also what an outside perspective can help me see. Within a life, we sometimes believe we are making independent decisions.
With sufficient hindsight, we discover that the same geometry kept recurring. The Headquarter is one of the places where this geometry reveals itself with particular clarity.
It has a center without being centralized. It has borders without being closed. It has a memory without being static. It has a strong material presence while also addressing the immaterial. It has authority without prohibiting dissent. It is both isolated and global.
These pairs of opposites are precisely what alchemy taught me never to resolve too quickly. Coïncidentia oppositorum: opposites can belong to a higher system that contains them without negating them. The cave and the world are therefore not two spaces. They are two sides of the same coin.
I need the cave to cope with the world.
And the world prevents the cave from becoming a tomb.
This sentence could almost summarize the chapter. Because any prolonged closure carries a risk. A system that is too autonomous eventually stops receiving the signals that should contradict it. It becomes sectarian. It tells itself its own truth.
The network is the antidote, provided it remains genuinely open to contradiction and does not become a bubble of confirmation. This is where the contemporary danger of digital architectures arises. We have built systems capable of connecting almost all of humanity. Then we have often used this power to group everyone with those who already think like them.
This is one of the paradoxes of the network: a technology of cognitive globalization can produce tribes even more closed than before.
The Headquarter was never supposed to operate like this.
I want to receive the information that bothers me.
The one that shakes a hypothesis.
The one that comes from an opponent.
The one that shows I was wrong.
This availability is the only serious protection against intelligence becoming certainty.
I have never believed that a system's power comes from its ability to win every argument. It comes from its ability to discover early enough that it is losing to reality. That is exactly what a server teaches you.
We can claim that it works. If it does not respond, it does not work.
Reality decides.
I like this brutality.
It is sometimes lacking in intellectual worlds where a theory can continue to circulate long after its real conditions have collapsed.
Information technology brings you back to the facts.
The package either arrives or it does not.
The disk either responds or it does not.
The system either holds the load or saturates.
The network routes or cuts out.
These tests are undiplomatic.
Perhaps that is also why I enjoyed creating a dialogue between the humanities and technology. Each corrects the excesses of the other. Technology reminds us that reality has constraints. The humanities remind us that measuring something is not enough to understand its meaning. The Headquarter is precisely the place where this encounter takes place.
The server asks if the information is available; the historian where it comes from; the lawyer what its status is; the economist what value it produces; the artist what sign will remain; the philosopher what it changes in our representation of the world.
All these questions can relate to the same subject. That is why I have never been able to definitively separate the professions that make me who I am. They are not simply juxtaposed. They examine the same reality from multiple perspectives. It is this plurality that screens render almost simultaneous.
But there is one thing that all these devices are still unable to explain.
Who is organizing this mass?
How do millions of data points, thousands of documents, objects, memories, conversations, and signals become something other than an accumulation?
We have described the body of the Headquarter. Then its sensory system, open to the world. Now we must look at the memory itself. The way it has been codified. The way Nadège and I have built, over the years, classification and recall systems coherent enough so that the environment is not only spectacular but truly functional.
We need to understand what happens when memory ceases to be purely biological and begins to be distributed throughout walls, objects, archives, codes, computers, and shared habits. That is when Headquarter ceases to be simply a connected cave. It becomes a brain outside the skull.
