Matter Remembers
The Works, the Companions, and Matter
There comes a point when thought can no longer deceive itself. As long as it remains in the brain, it can imagine anything. It weighs nothing, burns nothing, cuts nothing, collapses nothing, and rusts nothing. It passes through walls, suspends several tons in mid-air, moves masses effortlessly, and ignores the coefficients of thermal expansion. Then comes the moment when the cosa mentale, which I have just specified remains for me the origin and authority of the work, encounters its most loyal adversary: matter. Loyal, because it never lies.
Steel cannot be persuaded by rhetoric. Concrete does not alter its grip simply because the artist is absolutely committed to their idea. Heat does not negotiate. Nor does weight. Gravity is probably one of the most ruthless art critics I have ever encountered. And it is precisely for this reason that I love it.
After the companions, it was necessary to tell the story of what we faced together. I have never considered materials as neutral supports meant to receive a predetermined form. The material already possesses a history, an energy, an aging process, sometimes even a violence. It must be listened to before it is used.
The laboratory notebooks I mentioned at the beginning of this book have therefore never truly disappeared. The child who tested, measured, disassembled, and observed the consequences of a transformation is still there when I work with steel, acid, concrete, or fire. Simply, the scale has changed. What once fit on a table now weighs several tons, and mistakes no longer have the same consequences.
I have always wanted to understand materials down to the physical consequences of my decisions. Not to replace all trades—we have just seen how invaluable the skills of the companions are—but because it was impossible for me to conceive of a work whose behavior I didn't intimately understand. If I wanted corrosion, I wanted to know how it would begin, progress, change color, stabilize, or resume depending on the humidity. If I used a mass of iron, I wanted to know what it did to the surrounding environment. If I installed a monumental sculpture in a public building, I had to know its weight, its load-bearing capacity, its foundations, its strength, and the consequences of failure. The Total Work of Art never absolves one of responsibility; it amplifies it.
This is why the visual violence of some pieces can give an impression of catastrophe, while their actual placement, on the contrary, follows an extremely rigorous order.
Apparent Chaos and real order are not contradictory.
They fall under two different levels of interpretation. One belongs to the semiology of the work, the other to its mechanics and safety. A sculpture may appear to have fallen, torn away, precipitated, or frozen a second before collapse, while resting on calculations, foundations, and assemblies that precisely prevent this plastic catastrophe from becoming a real catastrophe.
I've always loved this boundary. Showing the risk without exposing the visitor to it. Making them feel instability from a calculated stability. Building vertigo without creating an accident.
It is here that The Containers of the Last Voyage, a work created in 2001, takes on its full meaning. The container belongs to the most impersonal grammar of globalization. It is a standardized box. Its dimensions, angles, and handles allow a commodity to leave a factory, be loaded onto a truck, go on a train, cross a port, enter the hold of a ship, traverse an ocean, and then reappear on the other side of the planet without anyone really needing to know what it contains. The container is one of the physical alphabets of global capitalism. It is to commerce what the data packet is to the network: a standardized unit of circulation whose efficiency rests precisely on indifference to its contents.
It was simply a matter of changing its context for it to begin speaking differently. At the Abode of Chaos, the thirty-six containers that make up The Containers of the Last Voyage cease to be mere logistical tools. Their mass, their metal, their industrial history, their capacity to enclose become symbols. “Last Voyage”: the title already contains death. We are no longer in the realm of the endless rotation of goods but in a journey from which there will be no return. The container becomes almost a coffin for the commercial world, an archaeological capsule of a civilization that believed it could indefinitely transport its possessions, its weapons, its waste, and its desires from one continent to another.
But this symbolic shift would be meaningless if the material itself didn't retain its industrial character. I didn't want to neutralize the container to make it appealing. I wanted to keep its weight, its metal sheets, its angles, its marks, this feeling that it still belongs to a network that transcends it. The material had to continue to remember what it had been. This is a constant principle for me: I prefer to transform the memory of an object rather than erase it.
The material has an origin.
It was produced for a specific purpose. It has been subjected to constraints, sometimes shocks, climate, heat, salt, and transportation. When it enters the artwork, it doesn't arrive pristine. I have never believed in this fiction of a perfectly neutral materia prima that the artist miraculously fertilizes. Even the alchemical expression materia prima doesn't mean matter without a past for me. Rather, it means matter available for transformation, bearing potentialities that have not yet been revealed. The difference is essential. I don't ask the metal to forget that it was once industrial. I utilize this memory.
The Cages of Hell stem from another experience of this memory. Here again, steel possesses an immediately legible anthropological function: to confine, to impede, to separate. A metal bar is never entirely innocent once it is repeated vertically before a body. It evokes prison even before the viewer has a chance to think about it. It is almost an archaic symbol.
The body understands before the intellect: here, the passage is blocked.
When these structures multiply, when doors, bars, and cages become an environment, matter begins to produce a psychological effect. That's what interests me. Not to represent confinement, but to provoke that fraction of a second when the body materially perceives what it means to be contained. It's no longer an image of a prison; it's the steel itself that directly creates a sensation of limit.
The thousands of elements that make up this structure also give a physical dimension to the word "hell." Hell is no longer merely a religious or literary image. It becomes repetition. Another bar. Another door. Another closure. Another impossibility. Number itself produces the crushing effect. Here we encounter Pythagoras by an unexpected path: everything is number, including oppression. Repeat a structure sufficiently and it ceases to be an object; it becomes a world.
But working with steel in this way means accepting its inherent power. A monumental gate is not like a gate enlarged on a screen. It possesses inertia. It develops stresses that increase with scale. The joints, welds, anchor points, and wind resistance all change. What the eye perceives as a slight increase in size becomes, mechanically, a different reality.
This is where we discover one of the most important laws of monumental sculpture: scale is never a simple enlargement. It transforms the very nature of the problem. Doubling a form does not mean doubling all its consequences. Mass grows differently, lever arms change, forces are redistributed, and suddenly what seemed obvious in a model becomes impossible or dangerous at full scale.
It was at this point that the work again called upon the companions from the previous chapter: engineers, metalworkers, welders, hoist operators— those who knew how a mass behaves when it left the ground. They could modify the technical path; the mental form, however, continued to direct the whole. And if the embodiment strayed too far from what I had seen, I would take it back, modify it, or destroy it. Because matter was not an excuse to justify a weakened form. On the contrary, it was the test through which that form had to become more precise.
This takes on yet another dimension with Losing One’s Bearings. The title might seem poetic if the physical installation didn't literally shift the meaning of the expression. Nine monumental sculptures, considerable iron masses, large enough to locally disrupt a compass reading by one or two degrees when approached.
What I particularly liked about this piece was that the material ceased to be merely visible and instead acted upon a measuring instrument. The sculpture alters its environment without moving. It possesses a field of influence. The viewer observes a mass, but the compass reveals that another, invisible reality is present. The material radiates.
What seemed stable — the north — suddenly began to tremble.
It's important to understand the symbolic significance of a compass. For centuries, it was the instrument of orientation, essential for great voyages, trade, conquests, and empires. Losing one's bearings means, psychologically, no longer knowing where one is going. Here, the expression intersects with a physical reality: matter itself can slightly distort the instrument that claims to indicate direction.
Today, I see a profound connection between this and my entire thinking on the Blind Spot. We believe we possess an objective instrument that shows us the world. Then, a factor we haven't taken into account alters the measurement. The compass hasn't gone haywire. It responds perfectly to the forces to which it is subjected. It was our model that was incomplete when we thought it would always show us a north independent of its surroundings. That's precisely what I call a blind spot. The sculpture, therefore, produces an epistemological experience through the material itself. No need to write an essay alongside it. Bring the instrument closer. Look at the needle.
The idea comes after the experience. It's the method I've always preferred.
First reality, then the concept.
There was also a very particular industrial reality behind these sculptures. Some parts and technical means came from a world where metallurgy is not an artistic fantasy but a discipline of extreme safety.
ACS Industries operated in areas where certain capabilities, processes, or information could be covered by confidentiality agreements and fall within defense-related environments. I will not reveal in this book what should not be revealed. There is a very clear line between explaining the technical culture that makes a project possible and turning this book into a disclosure of confidential know-how. That would be irresponsible.
What can be said is much more interesting: being around these environments has taught me that matter becomes something else entirely when failure is not an option. When a part is designed to withstand extreme stresses, when it belongs to systems where human error can have irreversible consequences, the relationship with metal changes.
We're no longer in the realm of approximations. Heavy industry, defense, nuclear power, aeronautics, and complex architectures all share this culture where materials are documented, tracked, calculated, and controlled. I imported this obsession into the Abode of Chaos. The appearance could be devastated. The process, however, must not.
This explains why I have always resisted the image of the artist joyfully improvising with a few tons of steel as if he were molding clay in a studio. On that scale, romanticism is dangerous. Intuition dictates the form, but execution demands almost military discipline.
A monumental mass does not forgive inattention. The body understands this immediately. Simply being present during a lifting operation, seeing a piece slowly leave the ground, hearing the cables tighten, observing all the men staring at the same mass, is enough to understand that art has suddenly become a physical matter once again. No one chats. Gestures become less frequent. Gazes become precise. Everyone knows that a mass of several tons leaves no room for foolish heroism. True courage then lies in respecting protocol.
I have always been fascinated by this reversal: the more untamed a work appears once finished, the more precise its creation may have been. A sculpture can evoke a post-catastrophe world, while its installation is a matter of millimeters, calculation, and rigorous organization. This is probably one of the most concrete definitions I can give of the Abode of Chaos: an aesthetic of catastrophe constructed in opposition to the actual catastrophe.
Steel also taught me about time. We often imagine a work finished when it leaves the studio. For me, it's almost the opposite. The metal then begins another life. Oxygen, humidity, temperature variations, atmospheric pollution, and surface reactions resume its work. Rust is not simply degradation; it is a visible chemical transformation of time. The artist can combat it, stabilize it, accelerate it, reveal it, or integrate it.
I became interested in acids very early on precisely because they make the boundary between fabrication and evolution perceptible. Acid is fascinating because it immediately strips the artist of the illusion of a malleable material. You apply it, but then a reaction occurs. It has its own speed, its own concentrations, its own nuances. Too little: nothing happens as expected. Too much: the surface is destroyed in another way. Temperature changes the reaction. Exposure time changes the result. Rinsing, neutralization, humidity—everything plays a role.
That's why laboratory notebooks naturally reappear here.
I was taking notes.
I was observing.
I started again.
The color wasn't chosen from a color chart; it had to emerge from the actual transformation of the material. An artificially oxidized but chemically authentic surface tells a different story than a paint job imitating rust. It's not a moral question of "true" and "false." It's a semiotic one. The sign isn't the same. In one case, I represent oxidation. In the other, oxidation is actually present. The Abode of Chaos has always preferred this second approach.
If I want a burn, I'm interested in what burns. If I want a crack, I look at what a rupture in matter truly means. If I want a scar, I want the support to have a history that justifies the word. This is where my own body enters the process. Working with the material at this level is never abstract. There's the heat, the dust, the noise, the weight of the tools, the sometimes blinding light of the weld, the vibrations that travel up my arms, the smell of the metal being attacked, the gloves that never completely protect me from the perception of the material.
I always wanted to maintain this physical relationship with the work. I could obviously conceive, direct, and have it executed, but I regularly needed to pick up the tool again, to touch it, to correct it. This need is linked to the cosa mentale we defined in the previous chapter: when the hand returns to the work, it checks that the gap between what the brain had seen and what the material has become is not too great.
That's why I've sometimes worked at night under halogen lights. Night, in fact, has a particular quality for this. The outside world disappears. Contrasts become more stark. Artificial light brutally cuts through volumes and sometimes reveals flaws that daylight had rendered almost invisible. You find yourself alone with the material. No more conversation, no more diplomacy, no more explanation. The form is there, and you know immediately if it's lying.
This experience might seem obsessive. It probably was. But how could it have been otherwise with a work that wasn't separate from my life? I didn't go home after leaving the studio. I inhabited the work. A dissonance, therefore, wasn't something I could postpone. It literally remained around me.
This necessarily transforms the relationship to correction and even destruction. Destroying a completed piece was not a spectacular gesture. It was sometimes the only way to restore order. One might think that an artist attached to the material should preserve it. Alchemy taught me precisely the opposite: all true transformation involves processes of dissolution, separation, and calcination. One must know how to lose a form to allow another to appear. The financial expense did not abolish this necessity. It could make me sick to throw away hours or days of work, but preserving a false form to offset its cost would have meant letting economics dictate the work. I couldn't do that.
This attitude also explains why the reuse of materials should never be understood solely as an ecological issue, even if that dimension exists.
A piece of steel already marked, an industrial structure, a container, a mass that has lived possesses additional information. It bears the traces of a previous world. When I move it into the Abode of Chaos, I perform an operation comparable to that of an archivist with a document: I change its filing system without erasing its origin.
Perhaps it is here that the symmetry between Artprice and the Abode of Chaos appears in an almost primal way. Artprice receives traces of the market, documents them, indexes them, links them, and preserves their provenance. The Abode of Chaos receives matter and subjects it to a different kind of transformation without erasing its memory. On one side, data; on the other, metal. But the question remains the same: how can we prevent the world from becoming amnesiac?
This is also why the Total Work of Art deliberately ages before our eyes. I have never sought that museum-like pristineness where time must be constantly erased so that the object appears to have eternally emerged from the studio. Time belongs to the Abode of Chaos. A surface changes. Vegetation intervenes. Water leaves its mark. The sun works on the pigments. Corrosion progresses. Of course, there are points where we intervene, safety constraints, necessary restorations, conservation choices. But conservation itself does not always mean a return to the original state.
Restoring a living, Total Work of Art requires understanding which of its aging processes belong to its history and which threaten its continued existence. This distinction is difficult and will become even more important when we discuss martyred heritage and institutional recognition.
How can we preserve a work whose very principle is to continue to transform itself?
How can we prevent heritage protection from becoming embalming?
These questions were already present in the subject matter before lawyers and institutions formulated them. The Abode of Chaos simply raised them by its very existence.
Finally, there was The Bunker of the Abode of Chaos, impossible to ignore when discussing weight. It encapsulates something of my relationship to sculpture: the desire to construct a mass that can no longer be perceived as a simple movable object. Beyond a certain quantity of material, sculpture changes status. It becomes almost a territory. The viewer no longer simply looks at it from the front; they must position themselves in relation to it. Their own body becomes the unit of measurement. This is one of the reasons why I have always loved monumentality when it is justified. Enlarging things to impress doesn't interest me. But changing the scale enough to alter the viewer's perceptual status, yes.
When two hundred tons of matter, or a mass several meters high, appear before you, your brain no longer processes the object in the same way. It immediately calculates, even unconsciously, what this thing represents relative to your body. Weight becomes semiotics.
He says: you are small. And this relationship is as old as architecture itself. Temples, pyramids, fortresses, cathedrals have always known how to use mass to shift the visitor's inner state. I have simply reintroduced this knowledge into a contemporary work that engages with the symbols of our time: bunker, disaster, container, industrial steel, infrastructure, war, global flows.
But unlike monuments that seek to deny gravity through height, I sometimes wanted to exhibit it. To show that the mass is truly there. Not to give the illusion of a stage set. The Bunker of the Abode of Chaos must not resemble a bunker: it must possess this brutal mass that makes the body believe in it.
Here again, the material becomes document. It documents our era, its fear, its obsession with protection, its technical capacity to build shelters that are simultaneously potential tombs. The bunker belongs to the 20th century as the fortified castle belonged to the Middle Ages, but it possesses a metaphysical difference: it is no longer intended to display power to the outside world; it is designed to allow a few bodies to continue to exist when the outside world becomes uninhabitable. Architecture of survival, therefore architecture of the end.
It is not insignificant that this form exists at the heart of the Abode of Chaos. It engages in a dialogue with Ground Zero, with war, with portraits of the powerful, with the catastrophes we have documented. It physically embodies this question that runs through all my work: what does humanity build when it begins to fear what it has itself produced?
The materials of the Abode of Chaos are therefore never merely materials. They are physical archives. Industrial steel speaks of industry. The container speaks of globalization. The cage speaks of confinement. The Bunker of the Abode of Chaos speaks of anticipated catastrophe. Acid speaks of transformation. Rust speaks of time. The iron mass speaks of invisible fields. Concrete speaks of permanence and collapse simultaneously. And my body, in the midst of all this, reminds us that an idea never enters reality without reason.
It demands energy, risk, time, and sometimes injury. This is where the word "scar" takes on a deeper meaning. We have spoken of legal scars, which we will discuss in more detail later in their own chapter.
Matter, too, bears its scars.
I cut it, heated it, welded it, attacked it, transformed it. It still bears the marks of this violence. And it gave them back to me.
The working body also receives its burns, its fatigues, its injuries, its memories.
There is therefore a strange interplay between the artist and the material.
I mark it and it marks me.
In the end, it becomes difficult to know which of the two contains more of the other's memory.
That is precisely why I can say that matter remembers.
It remembers what it was like before us. It remembers what we did to it. It remembers the techniques of the companions. It remembers my nighttime repairs. It remembers the rain, the sun, the seasons. It records the world without needing language. Every change to its surface is a temporal deposit.
And this idea brings me back, once again, to the grand architecture of my life. I spent decades building systems designed to prevent the disappearance of traces. With Artprice, it was about catalogs, prices, provenances, artists, sales, archives that the market risked losing. With the Abode of Chaos, I finally understood that matter did the same thing in its own way: it archived transformations.
One memorizes in data; the other memorizes in scars.
These are two forms of the same obsession: to save the trace before it disappears.
That's why I can never consider a work completely finished the moment I put down the tool. At that instant, something else begins. The material enters into time. It will continue to receive information that I don't fully control: temperature, humidity, the growth of a tree, the passage of an animal, dust, human intervention, the evolution of the landscape. The work gradually ceases to be a fixed form and becomes a living system.
We started with the companions, then delved into weight, steel, acid, corrosion, magnetism, and risk. We are now discovering that matter itself refuses to remain still. It proliferates, ages, transforms, interacts with the plant world, and produces fractals that surpass the initial intention without betraying it. The question is therefore no longer how to create a work of art. It becomes much more difficult: what happens when a work refuses to be finished?
