Writing with Movement

Films, Images, and Transmission


At a certain point, the camera ceases to be merely an eye. It becomes a way of writing.

With 999, we had constructed a filmic journey within the Zone. With outside perspectives, we had accepted that other cameras would produce their own interpretations. With social media, the visitor had become a media outlet themselves.

Here, a further step is taken: the point of view ceases to be limited to the height and trajectories of the human body.

The eye leaves the ground.

It rises.

It moves across.

It accelerates, slows down, and follows trajectories no visitor could physically follow.

And, in doing so, it reveals structures that the work already possessed, but which had remained partially invisible to the one who walked inside.

The drone changed the way I see the Abode of Chaos.

I do not mean to say that it taught me what I had conceived. The cosa mentale obviously remains primary. I had thought about perspectives, masses, alignments, repetitions, signs and relationships.

But the experience of the ground imposes a very simple physical limitation: man is caught within the geography he looks at.

He sees ahead. He turns. He memorizes. He mentally reconstructs.

He cannot, at the same instant, encompass the nine thousand square meters from a vertical position located above the site.

The drone creates this look.

And this gaze is strange because it simultaneously approaches the map, the satellite, the bird, and the machine.

From the ground, the Abode of Chaos may appear to be made up of an extremely dense succession of events.

Seen from above, recurring patterns emerge: axes, layouts, masses, and connections between interventions that, when experienced on foot, are separated by several minutes of walking.

I discovered something there that deeply interested me: a work can be rigorously conceived without the author having physical access to all the viewpoints from which its rigor can later be demonstrated. This is not a paradox.

The architect builds from plans that he can never simultaneously inhabit from all perspectives. The composer writes a polyphony that he cannot sing alone in all its parts. The mathematician can describe an object that exceeds any immediate intuitive representation.

The drone simply adds a new projection.

And this projection proved extraordinarily powerful for The Abode of Chaos. I knew the work was not disordered. I knew its Chaos was constructed. But seeing a legible geography appear from the sky provided a further form of verification. What had previously been experienced through walking could now be viewed almost as a blueprint.

From this point on, the drone ceases to be merely documentary: its perspective becomes part of the compositional process. If I photograph a sculpture after it has been created, the camera primarily documents something that existed before it. But if I begin the design process knowing that I can later verify the relationship between several masses from an aerial viewpoint, the drone's perspective becomes part of the creative process.

It does not become an author.

It becomes an instrument.

Just as a ruler, a compass, a laser level, modeling software, or a lab notebook can become design tools, the aerial camera produces spatial information that feeds back into the cosa mentale.

I understand.

I realize.

The drone gives me another point of view.

I may discover a tension, an alignment, a density or a break that was not sufficiently perceptible from the ground.

Then I can decide.

The loop is complete.

It is another form of the brain outside the skull.

The biological body cannot fly; the instrument temporarily gives it a perspective that is not its own. Human history is full of this perceptual augmentation.

The microscope grants access to the realm of the very small, the telescope to the vastly distant, sonar to what is hidden underwater, and the scanner to the inside of the body.

The drone provides access to a geography of the near that was paradoxically invisible because we were too close.

This idea has always interested me: sometimes, to better see what is in front of us, we need to move away from it.

We find ourselves once again in the mountain of my childhood.

The problem was never simply about looking further. It was about changing position. The drone physically performs this movement. And the move to 4K has further enhanced this capability. High definition does not just mean a prettier image. It allows you to simultaneously preserve both the area and the detail.

This is an important property for a fractal work.

When you fly over an area, you can perceive the overall composition while retaining enough information to later find a fresco, a sign, a surface.

The big and the small begin to coexist.

This ties in exactly with what I said about fractals: the general structure must be able to reappear at multiple scales.

Aerial video thus serves almost a tool for the scientific analysis of the work. It can reveal relationships that words would struggle to explain. This is also why zenithal views have played such an important role in architectural and heritage studies.

A view from the sky temporarily removes the usual human perspective and transforms the site into a graph, almost into writing.

The buildings become forms.

Paths become lines.

The sculptures become points or masses.

Vegetation becomes a network.

The artwork becomes a map.

But mapping is never neutral. It selects a viewpoint capable of making certain relationships visible. What's extraordinary about drones is that this mapping acquires a mobility.

We are no longer looking at a fixed aerial view.

We cross it.

Movement introduces time into the map. The camera can move down from the landscape to a detail, then up again, circle around a sculpture, pass over a wall, suddenly revealing what was behind it. This continuity profoundly changes perception.

An aerial photograph says: this is the organization.

A filmed journey says: this is how an organization can become a passageway.

That is where I started talking about writing with the movement. The word "write" is not chosen for stylistic effect.

A camera movement has a syntax.

It has a beginning, a direction, a speed, a turn, and a possible stop. It can prepare for a revelation, delay information, or connect two elements. It can create a visual sentence.

Let's take a very simple example: if the drone flies over a metallic mass and then gradually rises until the entire site appears behind it, the relationship between the local work and the Total Work of Art is produced by the movement itself.

No comment is necessary.

The movement does not think for the viewer; it organizes the transition through which a relationship becomes perceptible.

Cinema has obviously always known this. A tracking shot, a pan, a cut produces meaning. But the drone introduces a freedom of trajectory that would once have required considerable resources: cranes, helicopters, cables, complex rails.

The lightweight design frees the camera from many constraints.

And when a medium becomes technically liberated, an artistic question immediately arises:

What should we do with this freedom?

The danger is obvious: flying the camera for the mere pleasure of showing that it flies. Producing beautiful aerial images that add nothing to the meaning.

I have always hated technological gadgets.

A technology only interests me when it opens up a previously impossible perception. The drone therefore had to be integrated into the grammar of the Abode of Chaos, not impose its own virtuosity.

The trajectory was intended to serve the structure.

It is the same discipline as with a material. One can be drawn to a weld, a metal, a piece of software, a camera. If this attraction becomes the subject, the artwork disappears behind the technique. The technique must recede sufficiently so that its perceptual enhancement appears natural.

That, for me, is mastery.

True virtuosity does not shout: look what I can do.

It produces an obvious conclusion.

Night Intrusion works almost at the other end of the spectrum.

While the drone provides an overhead and almost cartographic view, nighttime, on the contrary, reduces visibility. It is this subtraction that interests me.

The Abode of Chaos is never exactly the same work by day and by night.

Daytime provides depth, textures, distant relationships, and natural color. Nighttime destroys part of this continuity and reconstructs space in fragments.

One light appears while another disappears.

A surface emerges from the darkness.

A fresco almost becomes a floating face.

The visitor loses the bearings he used a few hours earlier.

This is another zone.

And the term "intrusion" deliberately contains this feeling.

The camera no longer seems to be visiting a place prepared for it. It enters almost clandestinely into a sleeping organism. Even when this impression is constructed, it alters the viewer's relationship.

The daytime visit has a social aspect. You walk in an open space, with other visitors.

Night brings back solitude.

It makes certain things unsettling not because they have changed, but because the brain fills in what it no longer sees.

The off-screen space gains considerable power.

This is particularly interesting for a work that specifically explores the Blind Spot.

In the darkness, the blind spot ceases to be merely conceptual. It becomes almost physical.

We know that there is something beyond the limit of light, but we do not know what.

The camera moves forward.

The viewer waits.

This waiting produces an intensity that full visibility would eliminate. Night then introduces a philosophical question: what becomes of knowledge when visibility remains incomplete?

We readily associate knowledge with light. The Enlightenment itself made visibility a metaphor for reason. But much of our cognition is also built on incompleteness. We never have all the information. We move forward with areas of darkness.

Intelligence, therefore, is not, in my view, the total elimination of shadows. It also resides in the ability to avoid inventing just anything in what we cannot see. Night Intrusion can make us experience this limitation without any dialogue.

The camera shows very little.

The brain works harder.

It is a particularly powerful perceptual law.

It also aligns with the initiatory transmission of 999: not to give away the whole card immediately.

Leave a degree of mystery.

But there is an additional element here that I associate with the infrathin, in the Duchampian sense of the term. I like the word itself because it evokes something located beneath the visible mass, just as infrasound lies below the ordinary threshold of auditory perception.

There are forces in a monumental work that the eye does not immediately measure.

A mass can be felt without being fully seen. Architecture can produce pressure. An image can operate below the threshold of consciousness.

Nighttime amplifies these phenomena.

We no longer receive the object through all its visual information. We receive a presence. It is almost the opposite of the drone's high definition. And I like precisely this contrast.

On the one hand, to dramatically increase the available information. On the other, to remove some of it to see what remains. Both experiences reveal something about the work that ordinary observation did not.

This is what justifies a new medium.

It does not repeat.

It reveals.

The film En vadrouille had shown, from another angle, how far an image from the Abode of Chaos could now circulate on the internet. This question of audience, fragment, and corpus belongs to the transmission regime we have just examined. Here, what interests me is something else: what the camera itself does to the gaze when it changes position, trajectory, or the amount of information it transmits.

Finally, The Angels’ Share introduces a different and almost poetic nuance into this chapter of the camera.

The expression obviously comes from a universe where a part of matter disappears during the transformation process, as if something were escaping the control of the one who thought they had everything under control. This image seems particularly apt for the Abode of Chaos.

Filming a work of art always means losing a part of it.

No matter how many cameras, resolutions, angles, drones, or tracking shots we use, something remains uncaptured.

The temperature.

The smell.

The sensation of scale.

The body's fatigue after several hours. An unexpected encounter with a visitor. A light that will only exist for a second. A thought that arises because one is truly there. Perhaps this is the Angels’ Share:

This is what all mediation necessarily relinquishes to reality.

I am very attached to this idea because our technological age sometimes fosters a fantasy of total capture. We believe that by sufficiently increasing the resolution, the number of sensors, the scanning precision, or the density of the database, we will eventually possess the object completely. I do not believe that.

We can dramatically increase memory.

We can reduce some losses.

We can build a digital twin of remarkable accuracy.

But all representation remains a representation.

There is always a difference between the world and the model of the world. This difference is not, in my view, a simple technical flaw that a future machine will necessarily eliminate.

It is an integral part of the representation.

A 1:1 scale map that reproduced absolutely the entire territory would no longer be a useful map; it would be the territory.

Borges had seen this paradox.

The Abode of Chaos also confronts us with this.

A perfect digitization in the absolute sense would require reproducing not only the position of each material, but its molecular evolution, its temperature, the air, the light, the visitors, future events.

In other words: to remake the world.

The Angels’ Share protects us against this hubris.

It reminds us that all transmission is a reduction. And it is precisely because it reduces that it can become useful.

The film is selected.

The photograph is framed.

The drone chooses its trajectory.

The digital twin chooses its variables. The archive chooses its metadata. The language chooses its words.

Every system gains a capability by accepting a loss. The problem, therefore, is not to eliminate the loss. It is to know which one to accept. This question is central to all my work.

When 999 prioritizes the initiatory temporality, it loses some of the freedom of the visit.

When the drone prioritizes the overall view, it loses part of the physical connection to the ground.

When Night Intrusion prioritizes shadows, it sacrifices some visual information.

When the network prioritizes speed of movement, it reduces the context.

Each medium has its blind spot.

No corpus, however dense, becomes the work. The multiplication of representations can strengthen knowledge provided that the difference between the model and what it models is maintained.

I therefore refuse to allow a single medium, including an algorithmic one, to become the definitive representation of the Abode of Chaos.

They must be added together without being confused.

Books.

The photographs.

The films.

Aerial views.

The news reports.

The testimonies.

Topographical surveys.

The digital twin.

Procedures and databases.

None of them is the work itself. But their intersection allows us to build an extraordinarily robust understanding of the work.

It is a triangulation architecture. We find that word again.

Several imperfect representations, when independent and properly contextualized, can bring us much closer to the object than a single, supposedly total representation.

This is exactly the method of intelligence, science, law, and history.

We need to cross.

And the camera became one of those sources.

But, at the Abode of Chaos, it possesses a particularity: it does not always simply collect reality. It can participate in the invention of form.

The drone is the clearest example of this.

When I can see the composition from the sky, this view can inform a future decision. The camera is then comparable to the mirror in the painter's studio.

For centuries, artists have used mirrors to turn their work around and see imbalances appear to which their eye had become accustomed.

The mirror does not create the picture.

It gives the author another access to what he has created.

The drone is a flying mirror.

I really love this wording. It shows me the Abode of Chaos from an angle impossible for my body to grasp.

It can show me an error.

It can show me a coherence whose full extent I had not yet grasped.

It can confirm that a gesture works on multiple levels.

And this ability becomes extremely important for a work that is built over decades. Because the problem of habit is considerable.

When we live in a place every day, the brain gradually stops noticing certain things. This is a useful capability: otherwise, we would be perpetually overwhelmed by our surroundings. But for the artist, it becomes a danger. Techniques for defamiliarization must be invented.

The outside perspective is one of them.

Photography is one example.

Nighttime is one of them.

The drone is one example.

Changing the medium allows the work to retain some of its strangeness. This is perhaps the most profound function of this entire Part XI.

We have recounted the transmission to the world, but simultaneously we have recounted something that returns to the author. Each medium presents my own work to me in a different way.

The film restores my sense of time.

The journalist reflects back his reading of the work.

The logged-in visitor provides me with their thresholds.

The drone shows me its geography.

The night vision camera reveals its infrathin to me.

The network restores its propagation capacity to me.

The medium is therefore never a simple output. It belongs to a loop.

The work produces an image. The image encounters the world. The world responds.

This response eventually recurs throughout the work. We have found this feedback structure everywhere.

It is that of the living.

An organism that receives no feedback from its environment cannot adapt. Neither can a living work of art.

I must obviously reiterate the fundamental limit: adapting does not mean obeying the reception. The cosa mentale remains the principle.

I do not add a work because a video would have worked better with it. I do not modify The Abode of Chaos to satisfy metrics. That would be bringing the attention economy into the conceptual act and reversing the order of creation. But I can improve the way it is presented.

Discover a view.

Documenting a structure.

To create a film that will allow someone to see what was previously inaccessible to them.

This distinction between creation and mediation is key. It allows for openness without dilution. And it also explains why I can welcome technical innovations with interest without ever considering that they take possession of the work.

The drone is an instrument of optical defamiliarization. It simply shows me this: from this position, the artwork is seen differently. I can learn from this rendering without attributing any intention of my own to it.

The decision remains a human one.

This observation is particularly important today, as devices begin to acquire algorithmic analysis capabilities.

A camera can already recognize shapes, follow a trajectory, stabilize automatically, and reconstruct a volume. Tomorrow, it will be able to suggest framings, identify recurring patterns, and map motifs.

At what point does the tool begin to engage cognitively?

For a long time, an instrument primarily enhanced one sense.

The microscope magnified the eye.

The phone amplified the voice.

The server was increasing the memory.

With artificial intelligence, the tool is also beginning to enhance certain recognition, comparison, and formulation operations. This is a qualitative shift. But it does not come out of nowhere. Everything we have discussed has been preparing us for this encounter.

The Headquarter had outsourced the memory; the network, the presence; the drone, the point of view.

AI will begin to outsource some of the processing.

That is why the arrival of artificial intelligence in my story cannot be told as a technological chapter added to the end of this work.

It is the logical convergence of several past trajectories.

But before fully embracing this transformation, another shift in perspective must occur. The camera has taught us to see differently; now we must understand what happens when the artwork itself becomes an object of measurement, study, and proof.

The question changes in nature: no longer simply what do we see?

But how do we establish what we see?
